Y!Amp M9: Need Suggestions
Posted in Site News by Nick on October 27th, 2008
As you may already know, I am in the process of updating Y!Amp for Yahoo! Messenger 9, after many, many requests to get it to work. Per my usual process, I waited until 9 was out of beta because I’ve seen Yahoo! change the code from beta to final for the status area.
Anyway, in case you didn’t know, I am having to rewrite the program from scratch as I had accidentally lost all of the source when I reformatted and forgot to back it up. That being said, I thought I’d go ahead and ask for any suggestions you may have for the next release. I will say that right now, I don’t believe the new Yahoo! Messenger lets you put fake icons anymore, such as the fake webcam icon, fake status icon, etc. Although I haven’t really tried very hard to get that to work on the new Messenger yet.
And if you’re asking yourself why it’s taking me so long to make a new version—it’s half laziness and half the fact that I lost all of the source code. Now I have to go and download the old Messengers just to get the status change to work with them again. It isn’t hard to figure out, but I am just not as into Yahoo! Messenger as I used to be.
Here are some previews of the next version:
Current suggestions:
- NickoTyn – Let Y!Amp grab the last played song on your Last.FM account and show that in your Yahoo! Messenger status.
- EliteTrent – Let Y!Amp be compatible with other media players besides Winamp, such as iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.
So without further ado, what are some things you’d like to see in the next version of Y!Amp?

I’ve thought about that before, but then thought it might get to be bloated. But yeah, it probably isn’t too difficult to get that to work either. Thanks.

Not at this time, although if everything goes well it should be within the next 2 weeks.
It really depends on how many new features people want to see.

Alow Yamp! to have a multi color option to match your current desktop theme(such as vista colors/xp colors or just a multi color for people that like to tweak color schemes like me). and alow an option to shrink or minimize to taskbar.

Thanks Anson, nice suggestion, I am integrating that now as we speak.
Also, I’m happy to announce that I got integration with Last.FM working great! What’s great about this is that the Last.FM application works with most media players already, what Y!Amp does is grab what Last.FM sees and displays it in your status…so if you use Last.FM and any media player…just set Y!Amp to “Last.FM” and it will work…no need to select a specific media player!

you should just go ahead and make something called EliteAmp! that uses all the popular media players, and show’s them on all messenger status’s such as “YIM, AIM, MSN, Skype, ICQ, Google Talk, ect.” that would be a bank for the buck.

Yeah but I don’t want to make something that ends up being a huge project and is bloated.
Plus it’s almost done – works with Winamp and Last.FM flawlessly, and runs on both XP and Vista. I have all of the old features back in except the fake icons, which I’ll try to bring back in the next week or two.

Hey guys, I will be posting Y!Amp M9 up tonight or tomorrow.
Some things you should know:
1. It is still only compatible with Winamp, however it now works with something called Last.FM, which already detects most popular media players such as Winamp, iTunes and Windows Media Player. So in a way, it supports whatever Last.FM supports, if you get the Last.FM application. Last.FM is a program that runs in the background on a persons PC, and sees what music you’re listening to and sends it to the Last.FM website for anyone to see.
2. You cannot yet change the “skin” although I am building that section right now. To cut down on filesize, I think I’ll have it where you can have the default skin, or you can change the color of the entire program, and also adjust the transparency.
3. It still only works with Yahoo! Messenger. I definitely understand that it would be nice if it worked with AIM and MSN, too. I haven’t looked into changing statuses on those programs yet, but I see it as nothing but an improvement.

TDP-Radio:
Sorry, I just noticed that bug. Re-download the program in about 5 days and it’ll be fixed. Y!Amp will NOT notify you of this small update, because of a bug in the old version in Y!Amp where it knows that 9.9 is greater than 9.8, but thinks that 10 is less than 9.9. Weird right?
So on a small update like that, I don’t want to make everyone have to update again.
Thanks NickoTyn
